Simon Porter

Independent Mortgage and Protection Adviser

About Simon

I’ve worked in the financial services sector since 2000.

Before this, I held various managerial roles in retail, where I learned the importance of great customer service. I’ve always had a good understanding of financial services, so I decided to change course and pursue my interest in the sector.

My initial induction and training was three years working for Lloyds Bank. Here, I became qualified as a financial planner, gaining competent adviser status in the field of pensions, investments, and protection.

For the next 10 years, I worked as a self-employed independent financial planner, advising on pensions, investments, protection, and mortgage advice.

I’ve been working with Wealth Doctor since 2013, and now advise on all types of mortgages and protection. Since mortgages are much more complex than they used to be 10 to 15 years ago, I decided to specialise in this area.

My client base consists of mainly personal clients, and as an independent mortgage adviser, I have access to all lenders in the UK. Some of the lenders are household names, but I can also access specialist lenders not available to the general public. This means I can help the majority of clients find the best home for their borrowing requirements, with the most competitive rates of interest available.

My clients include first-time buyers, homemovers, remortgages, product transfers, buy-to-let mortgages, and portfolio landlords.
I also have access to specialist brokers for clients that require commercial finance and equity release.

Simon outside of work

I live alone, but have a 26-year-old son who now lives with his partner. So now I have full control of the TV remote again!

I’m a member of my local leisure centre and have been for many years. I’m there most days of the week trying to stay fit. I do a combination of gym sessions, swimming, Pilates and tai chi.

In better weather, I like walking and cycling.

Simon in the spotlight

My proudest moment as
an IFA has been…

Passing complex exams so I achieved the qualifications required to provide financial advice and help people. Recently, I helped a couple achieve a remortgage in very difficult circumstances, where their existing lender was going to repossess their home. There were a lot of hurdles to overcome, and it took a very long time to place the mortgage due to their age and occupations. Arranging the new mortgage successfully meant the clients could continue to stay and work in their home, and also keep their business. This was very rewarding and a great outcome for all of us.

The things I love
most about my job are…

Helping people achieve their goals, and assisting them in getting the most competitive deals for their mortgage. Mortgages used to be very easy to obtain, but in recent years the regulations have become very strict. This means that putting mortgages in place is now quite complex. Yet the right mortgage allows clients to build wealth or equity in their properties and create security for themselves and their families.

The types of people I
most enjoy working with are…

All types of clients. No two are the same, which creates variety and a sense of achievement when reaching their goals.
